Cremna lay on a rocky plateau some 250 m above the Cestrus valley, a dominating and easily defendible site to which the name alludes (from Gr. κρῆμνος = 'crags'). The city became a Latin colony named Colonia Iulia Augusta Felix Cremnensium under Augustus and subsequently issued its own coins with Latin legends. The 'EEILCI' on the reverse of our example is a blundered version of FELICI.
